Summer! ...and School?

The school year is coming to an end, but it does not mean that school should be out of the mind for the entire summer. Summer is a time to have fun and relax, but you can also utilize some time to prepare for the next school year and the future.

Some important things to think about is preparing for classes next year by starting on summer homework basically right away to provide yourself enough time to complete the assignment to the best of your ability. If possible, it is a good idea to plan out to dedicate time working on summer homework. Just remember to stick to the schedule to make sure it gets done on time! It’s not fun starting off the school year with a bad grade because a summer assignment wasn’t completed.
Other suggestions would be to get the AP practice books for classes you may be taking in the next school year to get a feel for what the material will cover and to start familiarizing yourself with the content, vocabulary, and such. I am not saying to start studying for the class by any means. It is just a good idea to get in the mindset of taking this class in the next year as it is stressful when school starts to get back in the groove of daily classes.

Another great idea would be to study for the PSAT if you are a current freshman, and especially if you are a sophomore. Students take the PSATs as sophomores and juniors, and juniors have the opportunity to become a National Merit Scholar if they are one of the top 50,000 scorers on the PSAT. There are other steps to becoming a National Merit Scholar after being a top scorer, but this achievement is highly regarded by colleges and is quite prestigious, so it would be worthwhile to spend some time studying for the PSAT over the summer especially if you are currently a sophomore.
An additional piece of advice is to start planning for your future by researching colleges and looking more into what colleges and majors may appeal to you. Maybe even look at the application requirements for colleges that you may want to attend. It really is never too early to start thinking about your future, and to consider your options when there is time and the stress of school isn’t an added factor while researching colleges.
The last and probably most important piece of advice I have: take advantage of outside learning opportunities! Enroll in courses at a junior college or participate in a summer program. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it is because you want to do it and not just to impress colleges when you apply for them.
However, this type of mindset can be applied outside of school. It is important to prepare for the future no matter what. One of the best ways to go through life is being prepared for whatever life throws at you, and this mindset will definitely get you there. What are your plans for the summer? Comment down below!
